Magento

Current release: 2.4.9, released 12 May 2026.

What it is

Magento is an e-commerce platform used to build and operate online stores. It provides catalog, pricing, inventory, checkout, customer-account, order-management, promotion, tax, shipping, and payment capabilities, with an administrative interface and a large extension ecosystem. The product is commonly encountered in two forms: an open-source, self-hosted edition and Adobe Commerce, a commercial offering with additional services and enterprise-oriented features. Magento installations are highly customizable, and many stores rely on custom modules, themes, integrations, and operational workflows built around its data model and APIs.

History

Magento emerged as a PHP-based open-source commerce platform and became widely adopted by merchants and agencies that needed more flexibility than hosted storefront products typically offered. Its early architecture encouraged customization through modules, themes, layout configuration, events, and dependency injection patterns. Adobe later acquired the Magento business and incorporated its commercial offering into Adobe Commerce. Across later generations, the platform shifted toward a more modern PHP application architecture, stronger API support, command-line tooling, Composer-based dependency management, declarative configuration, and cloud-oriented deployment options. Its ecosystem has also evolved around headless storefronts, progressive web applications, external search services, and integrations with Adobe products and other commerce services.

Migration notes

Migration to or from Magento is rarely limited to moving products and customers. A typical implementation contains a substantial amount of business logic in custom modules, themes, plugins, observers, layout overrides, and third-party extensions. These changes may affect pricing, promotions, tax, checkout, shipping, payment capture, customer segmentation, order status handling, and back-office workflows. Extension compatibility, abandoned packages, and modifications made directly to core files can complicate both platform upgrades and replatforming efforts. Data migration requires careful treatment of configurable and bundled products, category relationships, custom product attributes, customer addresses, passwords, store-credit or loyalty balances, orders, invoices, shipments, refunds, downloadable entitlements, and historical reporting needs. Multi-store, multi-language, and multi-currency configurations add further mapping work because catalog, content, pricing, and configuration can vary by website or store view. Integrations often include ERP, PIM, CRM, tax, payment, fulfillment, marketplace, search, analytics, and marketing systems, so interface contracts, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, and API limits should be inventoried before a cutover. Operationally, Magento stores may depend on caching, search indexing, background consumers, scheduled tasks, media storage, and deployment-specific infrastructure. A migration plan should identify which custom behavior must be retained, which can be replaced by native or SaaS capabilities, how SEO URLs and redirects will be preserved, and how orders and inventory will be reconciled during the transition.
