Magento 2.4.8 updates the supported application platform to PHP 8.3 and PHP 8.4, replacing PHP 8.2 in the supported PHP set. It also adds compatibility with newer infrastructure components, including MySQL 8.4, MariaDB 11.4, and OpenSearch 2.19. The release includes security corrections and core fixes across areas such as catalog behavior, checkout, APIs, GraphQL, indexing, and administration. Some fixes and capabilities apply only to Adobe Commerce modules, so teams using Magento Open Source should distinguish core changes from Commerce-specific ones.

Magento 2.4.8 remains within its supported window, so staying on a fully patched 2.4.8 installation does not create an immediate support gap. The practical risk is falling behind patch releases and later platform work: an unpatched base installation will not contain subsequent security and defect corrections, and it is limited to the PHP, database, search, and other service versions supported by this line. Deferring a move to a later line can also increase the eventual upgrade effort as custom modules, themes, payment integrations, and deployment tooling diverge from current Magento interfaces and supported runtimes.

Move first to the most recent patch available in the 2.4.8 line, rather than treating the initial 2.4.8 package as a fixed target. Inventory all custom code and third-party extensions, then confirm their compatibility with PHP 8.3 or PHP 8.4 and with the selected database and search-service versions. Rehearse the upgrade in a production-like environment with a copied database and media set, and test customer login, catalog indexing and search, checkout, payment authorization and capture, shipping and tax integrations, transactional email, API and GraphQL consumers, scheduled jobs, message queues, and administrative workflows. Take tested backups, document rollback steps, and use the results to decide whether to standardize on 2.4.8's supported platform stack or plan the next Magento line as a separate migration.
