2.4.2 released 4 February 2021, latest 2.4.2.
Magento 2.4.2 reached end of life on 28 November 2022.
What changed
Magento 2.4.2 was primarily a maintenance and security release over 2.4.1 rather than a redesign of the platform. It added 35 security fixes and a large set of core defect corrections across areas such as catalog, checkout, customer functionality, APIs, GraphQL, and administration. The cycle also expanded supported platform combinations, including PHP 7.4 and Elasticsearch 7.9, giving merchants a path to newer runtime and search components while retaining compatibility with the preceding supported stack.
What staying costs
Magento 2.4.2 has reached end of life, so the vendor no longer provides ongoing fixes or support for this line. A store that remains on it must absorb the risk of publicly discovered security issues, defects, and compatibility problems without a supported upstream remedy. The practical exposure grows as hosting providers, payment services, search services, browsers, and third-party extensions move beyond the PHP, Elasticsearch, and library versions this release was designed to use. Continuing to operate it can also make PCI-related reviews, incident response, extension maintenance, and future upgrades more difficult, because deferred changes accumulate in custom code and integrations.
What to do
Plan a staged upgrade to a currently supported Magento release that is compatible with the intended Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source edition and the store's installed extensions. First inventory custom modules, themes, API consumers, payment and shipping integrations, search configuration, and infrastructure dependencies; then compare each against the target release's PHP, database, search-engine, Composer, and service requirements. Build the upgrade in a non-production environment, update incompatible extensions and customizations, run schema and data upgrades, reindex, and test catalog operations, customer accounts, checkout, payment capture and refunds, order processing, administration, REST and GraphQL integrations, scheduled jobs, and performance. Take verified backups and prepare a rollback procedure before production deployment. Available patches can reduce known exposure during the transition, but they are not a substitute for moving off an end-of-life release.
