Migrating from Wix to Shopify

Overview

Moving from Wix to Shopify is usually a rebuild plus a controlled data migration, not a direct site copy. Shopify provides a commerce-focused catalog, checkout, order, and app ecosystem, but Wix page layouts, Wix apps, and custom interactions do not transfer as working Shopify components. Start by inventorying the current Wix store, defining the required Shopify customer experience and integrations, then migrate data into a tested Shopify store before switching the domain.

This guide covers moving from Wix to Shopify — see each platform's release history and version notes on its technology page.

What transfers cleanly from Wix to Shopify

  • Product data can usually be exported from Wix and imported into Shopify, including titles, descriptions, SKUs, prices, inventory, weight, product images, and basic variants. Product option structures should be reviewed because complex variant combinations may need cleanup before import.
  • Customer records can be imported into Shopify when the exported data contains usable names, email addresses, phone numbers, and addresses. Customer passwords cannot be migrated; customers need to activate accounts or reset passwords in Shopify.
  • Historical order data can often be retained through import tools or migration services. Validate line items, discounts, taxes, shipping charges, fulfillment status, transaction references, and order dates. Imported orders may be stored as historical records rather than recreated as native Shopify payment transactions.
  • Blog posts, pages, and basic media can be recreated or migrated, depending on export availability and the selected migration method. Preserve titles, body content, publication dates where supported, authorship information if needed, and image references.
  • A custom domain can be connected to Shopify after DNS changes. Keep the Wix site available until the Shopify storefront, redirects, checkout, and transactional email configuration have passed launch checks.

What does not transfer

  • Wix templates, editor layouts, section structures, and page-level styling do not convert into Shopify themes. Rebuild the storefront using a Shopify theme and theme sections, then implement approved customizations in Liquid, CSS, JavaScript, or a suitable app.
  • Wix-specific apps and their stored configuration do not automatically move. Examples include booking flows, restaurant ordering, memberships, events, forms, chat, automations, loyalty programs, and custom databases. Assess whether Shopify has a native feature, an app, or requires custom development.
  • Wix Velo code, custom collections, backend logic, APIs, scheduled jobs, and custom member-area behavior need to be redesigned for Shopify. Depending on the use case, this may involve Shopify apps, app proxies, Shopify Functions where applicable, metafields/metaobjects, external services, or a custom app.
  • Existing Wix URLs may not match Shopify's URL patterns. Shopify uses standard paths such as /products/, /collections/, /pages/, and /blogs/. Build a complete redirect map from every valuable old URL to its closest new destination.
  • Customer passwords, saved payment methods, and gateway tokenization cannot be transferred. Customers must establish new credentials, and recurring-payment or subscription data requires a provider-specific migration plan.
  • Wix checkout customizations and payment settings do not carry over. Reconfigure payment providers, tax settings, shipping zones and rates, fraud controls, order notifications, and any checkout-related apps in Shopify.
  • Search rankings and analytics history do not automatically transfer. Preserve content quality, metadata, structured data where appropriate, canonical behavior, measurement tags, and redirects to reduce avoidable organic traffic loss.
  • Many business functions have Shopify equivalents: email marketing, reviews, subscriptions, loyalty, search, analytics, shipping, tax, and accounting. Each equivalent must be selected and configured separately rather than assumed to transfer.

Effort drivers

  • Catalog complexity: number of products, images, options, variants, bundles, subscriptions, digital goods, gift cards, and custom product fields. Variant limits and option modeling should be checked before import.
  • Data quality: duplicate customers, inconsistent SKUs, missing image URLs, malformed addresses, incomplete product types, and inconsistent collection or category data create cleanup work.
  • Storefront complexity: custom Wix layouts, landing pages, interactive elements, multilingual content, accessibility requirements, and mobile-specific designs increase rebuild effort.
  • Integration dependencies: ERP, PIM, warehouse systems, fulfillment partners, accounting, CRM, email platform, reviews, subscriptions, POS, marketplaces, consent tools, and analytics each require configuration and testing.
  • Business rules: custom discounts, wholesale pricing, customer segmentation, shipping logic, tax requirements, B2B workflows, returns, preorder rules, and fulfillment routing may need a new Shopify-compatible design.
  • SEO footprint: number of indexed URLs, blogs, product pages, collection pages, image assets, backlinks, language or regional URLs, and existing redirects determines redirect and validation scope.
  • Data migration requirements: whether historical orders, customer tags, reviews, wish lists, loyalty balances, subscriptions, store credit, or gift card balances must remain available after launch.
  • Launch constraints: a high-volume trading period, active promotions, frequent catalog updates, or a requirement for minimal ordering interruption requires stronger change control and a final delta migration plan.

Recommended approach

  1. Audit the Wix store. Export available product, customer, order, and content data. Create an inventory of pages, URLs, Wix apps, forms, automations, tracking scripts, integrations, payment and shipping rules, customer account behavior, and legal pages. Crawl the public Wix site to capture indexable URLs, page titles, meta descriptions, headings, canonical tags, and status codes.
  2. Define the Shopify target state before building. Decide the Shopify plan and required sales channels, theme approach, app stack, customer-account approach, product taxonomy, metafield model, fulfillment workflow, payment gateway, tax configuration, shipping rules, and reporting requirements. Avoid adding apps until each Wix capability has a clear owner and acceptance criteria.
  3. Prepare and test migration data. Normalize product handles, SKUs, option names, inventory values, image filenames, customer emails, and collection assignments. Map Wix fields to Shopify fields and identify information that belongs in metafields or metaobjects. Run a test import into a development Shopify store. Reconcile product counts, variant counts, images, inventory, customer counts, and a representative sample of historical orders against Wix exports.
  4. Rebuild the theme and content. Select a Shopify theme that supports the required merchandising and editorial layouts. Configure global typography, colors, navigation, header, footer, collection templates, product templates, cart behavior, policy pages, and responsive behavior. Recreate only the pages and interactions that support a business goal; do not reproduce Wix layout quirks simply because they existed. Test accessibility, performance, and mobile behavior throughout the build.
  5. Configure integrations and operational settings. Connect payment providers, shipping and fulfillment services, tax settings, email delivery, analytics, consent management, search, reviews, subscriptions, customer support, accounting, and any inventory or ERP systems. Confirm that product identifiers and order data map correctly between Shopify and external systems. Use a staging or test mode where available and place end-to-end test orders.
  6. Build the SEO migration plan. Map every important Wix URL to a Shopify URL. Use one-to-one redirects where a direct equivalent exists; redirect removed pages to the closest relevant page, not automatically to the home page. Recreate title tags, meta descriptions, on-page headings, image alt text, internal links, structured data required for the business, and editorial content. Verify Shopify canonical URLs, XML sitemap availability, robots directives, and the preferred domain. Keep a record of URLs that intentionally return 404 or 410 because no relevant replacement exists.
  7. Perform pre-launch quality assurance. Test browsing, search, filters, product variants, price display, inventory behavior, discount codes, cart, checkout, shipping quotes, taxes, payment authorization, order confirmations, fulfillment notifications, refunds, customer account activation, contact forms, app behavior, and mobile devices. Test key integrations using realistic orders. Confirm analytics events, advertising pixels, consent behavior, and conversion tracking without double-firing tags.
  8. Launch with controlled cutover. Freeze nonessential Wix catalog and content edits, perform a final migration of changed records if needed, and recheck inventory. Point the domain DNS to Shopify, configure the preferred domain and SSL, enable redirects, remove storefront password protection only when ready, and submit the Shopify sitemap in search tools. Do not cancel Wix until DNS, email-related settings, redirects, storefront functionality, and access to needed historical records are verified.
  9. Monitor after launch. Review 404 reports, redirect behavior, search indexing, organic landing pages, checkout conversion, payment failures, shipping calculations, order exports, inventory synchronization, transactional emails, and analytics data. Correct high-value broken URLs and integration issues promptly. Keep the URL map, data reconciliation results, and rollback contacts available during the stabilization period.

FAQ

Can I transfer my Wix website directly to Shopify?
No. Products, customers, selected content, and some historical records can be migrated, but Wix templates, Wix apps, Velo code, and editor layouts must be rebuilt for Shopify. Treat the project as a data migration and storefront reimplementation.
Can Wix products, customers, and orders be migrated to Shopify?
Usually, yes, with field mapping and validation. Products, variants, images, customers, and historical orders are common migration targets. Check complex options, product customizations, customer duplicates, imported order totals, fulfillment statuses, and transaction references. Customer passwords and saved payment methods cannot be moved.
Will moving from Wix to Shopify hurt SEO?
It can if URLs, content, metadata, and redirects are not managed. Build a URL redirect map before launch, preserve valuable page content and metadata, avoid redirect chains, test old URLs after cutover, and monitor indexing and 404 errors. A carefully executed migration reduces risk but does not guarantee unchanged rankings.
How do I move my Wix domain to Shopify?
You can connect the existing domain to Shopify by updating its DNS records, or transfer domain registration later if that suits your operations. Plan the DNS change only after the Shopify site is tested. Verify the preferred domain, SSL, email-related DNS records, redirects, and analytics after cutover.
Do Wix apps work on Shopify?
No. Wix apps do not run on Shopify. Identify the business function each Wix app provides, then choose a Shopify-native feature, a compatible Shopify app, an external integration, or custom development. Test data migration and operational workflows for reviews, subscriptions, loyalty, bookings, forms, memberships, and other app-driven features.
